How the AI Check-In Calls Actually Work

Push notifications are easy to swipe away. MaxDex phones you instead — a short, personal voice check-in built from your actual plan, so you start the day you intended rather than the one that happens by default.

What happens on a MaxDex check-in call?

Short answer

Max phones you at a time you set and delivers a short spoken briefing built from your planner blocks, active goals and recent energy data. The morning call names your priorities and first action; the evening call closes the day.

The script is generated before the call from your own data, not read from a template. It knows which blocks are scheduled, which goals are active, and roughly how recovered you are, so the call is about today rather than about productivity in general.

Calls typically run two to three minutes. You can talk back — Max can add a task, move a planner block, or log something during the conversation.

  • Morning briefing: priorities, first physical action, energy context
  • Evening debrief: what moved, what stalled, what tomorrow holds
  • Context pulled from your planner, goals and energy curve

Why does a call work better than a notification?

Short answer

A banner can be dismissed without a decision. A call occupies the same channel as a person interrupting you, so it is harder to defer reflexively — and it arrives as a conversation rather than another badge to clear.

Visual notifications habituate. After a few weeks your attention files them alongside everything else on the lock screen, and the prompt stops functioning as a prompt. Voice reopens attention because it is a channel you have not trained yourself to ignore.

This matters most at the exact moment productivity software usually stops helping: the gap between having a plan and starting it. Organising is the easy half. See why lists stall after they are written.

When do the calls happen, and can I change them?

Short answer

You choose the times. Most people set a morning call shortly after their usual wake time and an evening call before wind-down. The morning slot deliberately sits after sleep inertia has begun to clear.

Sleep inertia — the grogginess immediately after waking — has a well-documented time course of impaired alertness and decision-making. MaxDex models it as a decay over roughly the first two hours after waking, which is why scheduling a demanding planning conversation for the instant your alarm goes off tends to work badly.

The energy model treats this as an explicit driver rather than an afterthought, so the call can be placed where you are actually able to use it.

Is this a real phone call or an in-app sound?

Short answer

It is a real call. On iPhone it uses CallKit, so it arrives on your lock screen like any other incoming call. You can accept or decline it the same way.

That is the point of the mechanism — an in-app chime is just a notification wearing a costume. A native call interface carries the social weight that makes it harder to dismiss on autopilot.

Frequently asked questions

Does MaxDex actually call my phone?

Yes. Morning briefings and evening debriefs arrive as real voice calls — on iPhone through CallKit, so they appear on your lock screen like any other incoming call, not as an in-app notification sound.

What does Max say on the morning call?

A short briefing generated from your own data: the priorities you set, the specific first action to take, and how your energy is tracking based on recent sleep and activity. It typically runs two to three minutes.

Can I talk back during the call?

Yes. It is a conversation, not a recording. You can add a task, move a planner block, log a meal or workout, or talk through what is blocking you, and Max acts on it during the call.

Can I use it as a wake-up call app for ADHD mornings?

Many people use the morning session as both a wake-up and a task-initiation prompt. MaxDex does not diagnose or treat ADHD; it is productivity software whose prompts are harder to ignore than a banner.

What if I miss or decline the call?

Nothing punitive happens. A missed call is recorded in call history and the plan stays as it is. The system is designed around missed days being a scheduling problem to solve, not a streak to break.

How many calls do I get per day?

Base includes voice calls with a monthly usage allowance; Pro raises that allowance and adds a second daily call plus smart notifications. The Free tier has no AI voice calls. See /pricing for the current catalogue.

Is this the same as a text-to-speech notification app?

No. MaxDex also supports voice-style reminders, but the core product is a scheduled two-way AI check-in call tied to your plan and energy — not a utility that reads notifications aloud.

Will the call wake me if my phone is on silent?

On Android, planner alarms play through the alarm audio channel. On iPhone, the Critical Alerts entitlement needed to override silent mode is built but still pending Apple approval, so a silenced iPhone will not sound the alarm today.
