When the Plan Is Done and You Still Cannot Start
Task paralysis is not a planning failure. The plan is usually finished — often over-finished. The failure is in the transition from a completed plan into the first physical action.
What is task paralysis?
Short answer
The state of knowing exactly what to do, wanting to do it, and being unable to begin. It sits after scheduling, which is why more planning tends to make it worse rather than better.
The distinguishing feature is that information is not the missing ingredient. You can describe the task, its steps and its deadline in detail. The body still does not move.
This is why productivity software so often disappoints here: nearly all of it is built for the previous moment, capture and organisation, and assumes the energy to start already exists.
What helps when you cannot start?
Short answer
Two changes with evidence behind them: shrink the first step until it requires no further decisions, and attach it to a specific external cue rather than to a general intention.
The cue half is the better evidenced. An implementation intention — "when situation X arises, I will do Y" — showed a medium-to-large effect on goal attainment (d = 0.65) across 94 independent tests, because it hands initiation to the environment instead of to in-the-moment motivation.
The step half is a matter of degree. If the first action still requires a judgement call, it is not small enough. "Open the document and type a heading" passes; "draft the report" does not.

Why does a voice cue help more than a notification?
Short answer
Because banners habituate. After a few weeks your attention files them with everything else on the lock screen, and the prompt stops functioning. A call occupies the channel a person would use.
It also removes the negotiation. A notification can be dismissed without a decision; answering a call means engaging with the question of what you are about to do, which is exactly the step avoidance skips.
This is the mechanism body doubling exploits, minus the camera — see body doubling without video.
Does energy affect task initiation?
Short answer
Yes, and it is often the overlooked half. Sleep debt and the circadian afternoon dip both raise task aversiveness and impulsiveness, so attempting your most avoided task in your worst window stacks the odds against you.
If you have been unable to start something for days, it is worth checking whether you keep attempting it at the same bad hour. Moving the attempt is cheaper than trying harder.
MaxDex builds the day from a modelled energy curve rather than treating every free hour as equivalent.
Is this a treatment for ADHD?
Short answer
No. MaxDex is productivity software. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent ADHD, executive dysfunction or any other condition, and nothing in it should be used as a clinical signal.
Many people who use it describe ADHD-related task paralysis, and it is designed with that experience in mind. Designing for an audience is not the same as treating a condition, and we do not blur the two.
If task initiation difficulties are persistent and impairing across many areas of life, that is a conversation for a clinician. See the full boundary.
